I had some time traveling from Missoula to Spokane last Thursday 5/23 to stop in Wallace for the night.
I wanted to check out some of the Brunelle landmarks so when I got to town I drove up Burke Canyon a ways, as far as Black Bear where this photo of Marguerite was taken in 1906, and back through Woodlawn Park to Wallace.
Then I went up 9 Mile Creek Road to the Nine Mile…

We met at the parking garage downtown. I had been drinking water and lemon/lime gatorade all morning, but had scared myself so much in the past few weeks reading negative experiences that it really didn’t matter how prepared I thought I was. I wanted to try Bikram yoga at least once in my (hopefully not shortened) lifetime, and I had found a friend to go with me. Bikram yoga lasts an hour and a half and is practiced in a 105-degree room. It consists of 26 poses, each done twice. It is not…

Alvan Brunelle told the story that in 1911 when he was 24 he and friends hopped a train in northern Idaho, and railed from Spokane to Boise.
There they visited some capital city friends, rode the trolley to the end of Warm Springs Avenue, took a swim at the Natatorium and then Alvan visited Harry Orchard in prison.
He…

Has anyone noticed that Bev and I are pictured on Brunelle Nation as a question mark? Probably not, so what else is new after a combined 161 years? (That's a combined 112 years of marital bliss!) So whether or not you know, or know of us, we are here and kicking with a few things to add, now and then. What brings this on is a follow up on our re-done deck and the dedication thereof. As some of you may recall, our get together on Aug. 8, included multiple celebratory items including Krista's…

I faxed this great historical article to my Dad, soon to be 88, who faxed me back this response:
"I didn't know many of the things Andy mentioned. One thing: My Dad told me that when he won all that money he hired a horse and buggy to take him back to Murray. Also, I asked my Mother for a dime to see a movie and to see MIckey Daniels who had been in the Our Gang comedies. The only money she had was a dime that was partially melted in the 1910 fire. I won a silver dollar for being voted…

The 100th anniversary of Big Blowup will be observed August 20-21, 2010 in ceremonies in northern Idaho and Montana and this event serves as an inspiration to compile a Brunelle family story of the 1910 fire that swept through Wallace. The story revolves around Alvan Brunelle and Marguerite Francis Haney, both of whom lived through the 1910 fire, later meeting and then married in 1915. Because of them we are here…

Yesterday I bought some really good cooking apples that were grown locally. This part of Virginia and especially the nearby Shenandoah Valley were historically important suppliers of apples to the rest of the country. The Albemarle Pippin is as local as you can get here in Albemarle County. I do not remember the name of the apples, but they were not pretty in the grocery store sense of the word. Most of the local apples are smallish and multicolored, with tones ranging from yellow to green to…

Hi All!
Thought I'd just update everyone on what I have been doing, and what the future holds for me, if anyone was curious...
Right now, I am taking 3 classes in summer school. They cram one full semester into a 5 week session, and I only have two weeks left! I've been absolutely swamped with homework, and I'm kind of regretting taking 9 credits in only 5 weeks! But this will make my semester easier in the fall when I finally begin my student teaching!
Last…

Too much stress!!!
We filled out a student stress scale today in my Kinesiology class. I scored a 311, which means I have a high health risk. We learned some time management and stress relief techniques that I really need to start using. For example: I need to prioritize certain things in my life: Reaching my life goal, things I have to do, and eliminating time wasters (T.V. is my worst one!). Setting goals and actually writing them down helps you focus on the important things in…

Long week at work. They're all long these days. It's been cold and snowy here this week, but it's warming up this weekend. We're looking forward to that.
We don't get big moist flakes of snow here, it's always cold when it snows so it's light and dry and goes away quickly. but it makes the roads pretty crappy for a couple days. We haven't had any bad ice storms this year though, so that's good.
We woke up Tuesday morning at 5am to police sirens and people yelling. Something was…

I woke up this morning around seven and took the bus to the convocation center here at James Madison University. All three of my classes had been canceled for the event, but other students weren't as lucky. Bonnie and I joined the line, sitting on a purple blanket that served as a very thin barrier between ourselves and the frigid sidewalk--today was one of the coldest, windiest days we've had so far this season, and I spent it balled up in my coat waiting to hear Obama speak. Well worth it!…

This morning I watched the world piece together while walking from the parking garage to the office. Lisa passed me in her red SUV, simultaneously waving and looking for a space. I imagined us walking to work together and chatting, like we were equals, like we were the same age and had applied for these jobs together. I looked down to the street and saw the two bankers who process my work's deposits daily, one a mousy pale girl with long bleached hair, the other a tall, tan-skinned woman I…
