If it's not granite, then what is it? I found a flow chart for rock identification at this link:

The first decision point is knowing if it's siliciclastic, cabonaceous, carbonate or chert. I remember seeing chet at a tour of the Smoky Canyon Mine on the Wyoming border and someone setting a rock on my shoulder and then saying, "Let me get that chert off your back."
